Structural Value and Market Reference

Fair Value is the product's reference value under one of two methods. Structural Value compares eligible peer sets and adjusts for the product's older relative-price history. Market Reference uses the product's own applicable trailing, MSRP, premium or blended reference while qualifying Structural Value evidence is unavailable. Both methods use the same 45% Value, 30% Momentum and 25% Supply score weights.

Eligibility is checked again every day in the scoring snapshot. A product automatically moves from Market Reference to Structural Value when all peer, history and current-price requirements qualify. A premium price, older release date or missing MSRP is not a permanent exclusion. If the evidence stops qualifying, Market Reference resumes where it supports a usable valuation. No product switches just because a fixed number of days has passed.

What Structural Value requires

  • At least 5 other sets of the same box format. One-, two- and four-year windows are centered on the product's release age, with narrower windows tested first for each comparison method. The target's entire set is excluded, and every peer set has equal weight.
  • Positive market-based current prices for the product and its peers, from at least two contributors, no flagged outlier, and prices no more than 2 days old. Existing thin-market rating requirements also apply.
  • At least 28 matched older dates across 4 weekly groups. The adjustment uses post-release observations from 365 to 90 days before the snapshot, with enough qualifying peers on those dates. Historical prices need at least two contributing sources and two observations per date. Carried-forward, fallback, rejected and flagged outlier observations are excluded. An unstable historical premium does not qualify.

Products explicitly labeled Special Edition in their catalog title require Special Edition peers; ordinary editions cannot supply that peer group or borrow from it. The same minimum peer count and all other evidence requirements apply.

Where enough comparable MSRP data exists, the baseline compares price-to-MSRP ratios. Otherwise it compares observed prices for the same box format without inventing an MSRP. The product's older premium or discount adjusts the baseline; limited history pulls that adjustment closer to the peer baseline. Passing these checks does not guarantee that peers capture every source of collector demand.

Range, confidence and validation

The Structural Value range shows sensitivity to the peer-only baseline and older historical-premium estimates. It is not a statistical confidence interval and does not cover every source of valuation uncertainty. Value contributes neutral points inside the range; outside it, Value uses distance to the nearest boundary. Fair Value, Buy Below, displayed spread and signal entry checks use the central estimate. Structural Value is capped at Medium reference confidence.

Changed rankings or lower correlation with Momentum do not establish better prediction. Daily comparison results are retained from the same inputs, and earlier snapshots keep their original model versions. Predictive performance must be evaluated against subsequent outcomes; elapsed time alone is not validation.

How Market Reference chooses its anchor

Market Reference prefers the product's own validated trailing history. Modern products without enough history can use the applicable MSRP curve; eligible Collector Booster Boxes can use their own premium anchor or the existing 40% MSRP / 60% trailing blend. Bundles require their own product history. Market Reference retains the legacy discontinued-set Momentum and Watch caps. Qualifying Structural Value uses the normal score and signal checks.

Under Market Reference, vintage products at least 15 years old or containing Reserved List cards use their own trailing anchor, and a vintage box anchor below $1,000 is rejected. A qualifying Structural Value estimate can value an older box under the independent peer and price-quality rules.

Rating eligibility, score and signal

Both methods require a usable current quote no more than 2 days old, an accepted market or listing price basis with contributing-source evidence, no flagged outlier, a usable Fair Value and confidence above None. If a publication check fails, Fair Value, Buy Below and the public score are N/A; a released product's status is Not rated. An unavailable valuation does not keep an old score or target even if older numbers remain in the record. Booster boxes released from 1995–2010 also require at least three current contributing sources, a market-based current price, and no 30- or 90-day momentum window sourced directly from listing asks. Internal diagnostic calculations are not public ratings. Not rated products remain searchable but are excluded from score rankings, All-Stars and the Starting Lineup.

Supply calibration

The Supply pillar remains 25% of the Bullpen Score, but its product-format bases are now compressed halfway toward a neutral 60. Collector Booster Box is 69, Play Booster Box 62.5, Set Booster Box 60, Booster Box 59, Draft Booster Box 56 and Bundle 50. Age and Reserved List scarcity bonuses are unchanged. This reduces automatic format bias without changing Value, Momentum, Fair Value or the signal thresholds.

Published signal ladder

The score-derived bands are Avoid 0–45, Watch 46–59, Tactical Buy 60–64, Buy 65–69, Strong Buy 70–79 and Grail Buy 80–100. Strong Buy additionally requires confidence above Low and a current price at or below Fair Value. Grail Buy keeps the stricter discount, confidence, momentum and market-anchor requirements.

Cold-start signal ceiling

Where the valuation qualifies, the first 30 days after release retain a numeric score but cap Tactical Buy, Buy, Strong Buy and Grail Buy signals to Watch. Avoid remains Avoid. The score remains visible for research, but cold-start products are excluded from score-ranked leaderboards, All-Stars and the Starting Lineup until day 30. Explicit pre-release scoring exceptions follow the same signal ceiling. The rule changes conviction, not Fair Value or the Bullpen Score formula.

Confidence

Confidence describes evidence quality, not score strength. Structural Value is capped at Medium. Under Market Reference, High confidence is earned only when the current price has at least two contributing market sources, uses a transaction-derived market basis, and is supported by at least 60 observations across a 90-day per-product trail refreshed within 14 days. The two-source threshold matches the full live source set available to liquid modern products. Usable evidence that misses any High condition is capped at Medium. A listing-basis current price is Low. Confidence never adds or removes Bullpen Score points; it controls eligibility and signal guardrails.

Vintage and thin-market pricing

The 1995–2010 release window activates stricter evidence requirements for booster boxes, but it is not a permanent blacklist. A box automatically becomes rateable again when later market evidence clears the gate. For Not rated products, any retained price is a dated source reference, not a verified available English sealed purchase price. Compare equivalent languages, packaging and condition. A seller ask is not a completed sale and does not automatically become Fair Value.

TCGplayer market reference

Where the TCGplayer / TCGcsv feed supplies a normal reference price, Booster Bullpen primarily uses TCGplayer Market Price. It reflects recent marketplace transaction data; it is not necessarily the lowest active listing or the price at which a box is immediately purchasable. Live listings may be above or below Booster Bullpen's displayed market price. Thinly traded and vintage sealed products can have less reliable references, so their prices should be reviewed with additional guardrails. The displayed current price is a multi-source aggregate where available, not always a direct TCGplayer Market Price.

Price basis and provenance

Every price observation records what kind of evidence it is: market for transaction-derived evidence, listing for a seller ask, fallback for a carried-forward or derived value, and unknown where the semantics are not established. Basis is tracked through daily aggregation and surfaced on the aggregated row, so a published price can be traced back to the evidence behind it. Listing-derived inputs are not presented as transaction coverage, and a change of basis is not reported as price appreciation.
